El Juan Carlos I (L-61) , catalogado inicialmente como Buque de Proyección Estratégica , es un novedoso buque de asalto anfibio de la Armada Española botado el 10 de marzo de 2008 by English company Navantia , [5 ] which is named in honor of current head of state, King Juan Carlos I of Spain . The ship

The Juan Carlos I is a multipurpose warship from the English Armada , similar to the LHD U.S. of Wasp Class , with the addition of a ski-jump nose to improve the capacities of fuel and weapons of aircraft V / STOL , plus a new electric propulsion system long back. The design was approved in September 2003 and construction began Navantia Ferrol the May 20, 2005. [ 7 ]

The construction of the BPE (Strategic Projection Ship) fits into a historical context of increased budgets and the assumption gradually greater international responsibilities by Spain . The new vessel should play an important role in the fleet. A platform that has a dual role:

  • mobility support Marines, supplementing the rest of the Amphibious Ready Group. This is their primary role, as evidenced by its number, L-61. The ship has the capacity to enable completion of the project a joint brigade of Marines. Make
  • strategic lift capabilities of ground forces.
  • also act as a platform for carrier-based aviation. Alternative will be the platform of the "Prince of Asturias" to operate the aircraft loaded, when immobilized by works, and important gaps to be overcome.

The role of the ship is part of the structure of the Navy fleet in a single group of projection, naval air and amphibious units (as well as the two logistics support ships). It also aligns with the strategic shift of the U.S. Navy, to go for the "brown waters" and "littoral warfare", giving up the uniqueness that have had the "blue and green waters" and control of vast stretches of ocean. The English Armada is also redefining its strategy defined as a force to project its power on the coast and on the coast and, presumably, inwards. Therefore it is necessary to enhance amphibious capabilities with modern and versatile vessels for peacekeeping operations, amphibious and humanitarian. Do not forget that next to the entry into service of this ship was the empowerment of the English Marine Corps with new LCM boats, vehicles "Piranha" missiles "Spike."

Propulsion

is the first ship in which the Navy use an enhanced version of diesel-electric propulsion. Its power plant is a gas turbine 19,750 hp and two diesel generators CV 7860. POD has two 11-MW each with fixed-pitch propeller of 4.5 m diameter. Its range is 9,000 miles at 15 knots. His speed is:

  • In amphibious operations: 20 knots.
  • In air operations: 21 knots.
  • Maximum sustained 19 knots.

happen to so-called "horned" Hernán Cortés (L-41) and Pizarro (L-42) , both LST (Landing Ship Tank, landing ship tanks) the Newport class which will be written off both its antiquity and for budgetary reasons (their operating costs will be allocated the operation of the new vessel).

The launch took place as planned on March 10 2008, just after the general elections [10 ] in the presence of the Kings of Spain.

The April 18 2008 of first thing in the morning when it was moored in the process of arms, the final phase of its construction in the spring of Navantia, broke of stern hawser due to the wind. The ship, which has a strut of 26 feet, began to separate from the wharf; however, the incident was resolved with the help of five tugs to return to their place. [ 11 ]

The 22 September 2009 of , aided by two tugs , put to sea for the first time to conduct its first test at sea. [ 12 ]

In February 2010 new engine was installed after one of the two engines of the ship is damaged in the summer of 2009 by an engine malfunction auxiliary. [ 13 ] [ 14 ] The May 24 2010 of the past began sea trials, [ 15 ] which ended on 2 June 2010. [ 16 ] was expected to be delivered to the Navy on June 24, [ 17 ] however, the policy of cutting spending on general government budget and Defence in particular encourage the ministry dilate the maximum delivery time, so it is anticipated that at least until Autumn is not ultimately delivered to the Navy. [ 3 ]

Similarly, in the first test, there were problems cavitation in front propeller blades, which led to the redesign of these. [ 17 ] After placement, conducted new tests in the sea between 24 and Aug. 25 about 15 miles from Ferrol and La Coruna, with the support of the frigate Alvaro de Bazan . [4 ]

was officially handed over to the English Armada 30 September 2010.
